The Playroom Reveal
/A few weeks back we told you about the kiddos’ new playroom that we created by switching up the boys’ room and moving it to the front of the house. The reason for that was because we wanted a playroom for them to have all to themselves, where they could play and run around and make a mess and it would be okay because we could just close the doors and pretend we don’t see it. Just kidding about that last part. Kinda.
Well, we’ve since switched this room up and it’s no longer a playroom anymore (womp womp) , which is sad because we really liked the way it turned out! And the kids did, too. It was bright and playful, and since this is the only bedroom in the house that doesn’t have a closet, it functioned perfectly as a playroom. We’ll get into why it’s not a playroom anymore in a later post, but for now, why don’t we remember what once was and have a moment of silence for this fun and quirky room?
Just behind us out of frame is little sis’ crib to the left and a bookcase with all the kiddos’ books on it (we called it their reading corner) to the right. Both the couch and the chair are from a new line of furniture at Walmart associated with Netflix’s new Queer Eye, and we received them as part of a collaboration we did a few weeks back. We love them because they’re actually really comfy and durable, so we didn’t mind if the kids played and jumped all over them.
Besides that, the colors are neutral enough that they pretty much look good with any decor you already have. They fit right in with our grey & white rug and green & white plaid curtains (that are actually just tablecloths PJ found in the discount pile at Target 3 years ago!). Someone asked us in a comment on IG recently if we ever think about painting rooms any other color than white, as white is “boring and overdone”. While we do love a nice, bright white room, almost our whole house is painted a beige color called Urban Putty by Sherwin Williams, and only the bedrooms and bathrooms in our house are painted white. But to be honest, we love doing a white wall and then accenting the room with fun pops of color, like the green and blue in this room. When done right, even white rooms can be warm & cozy, and don’t have to feel stark and cold.
One of our favorite parts of this whole playroom refresh was that we didn’t have to purchase any of the furniture- we just used what we already had and brought in pieces from other rooms (with the exception of the couch and chair that were gifted to us as part of the collaboration with QE). The rug and curtains were already there, the console table under the windows was PJ’s grandma’s that has been in literally every room in every house we’ve had over the years, the white side tables were used as bedside tables in our old guest room, the blue lamps from Target were already in the boys’ room, the huge ski print from Minted was on the opposite wall and we just moved it directly across from where it was, and the dresser the TV is on houses the boys’ clothes and was also in that room when it was previously their bedroom.
The two poufs (they’re sold out now!) used to live in our guest room that is now little sis’ room. We always call that room the “tree house room” because there’s a huge tree just outside the window and in the summer, when it’s all green, it feels like you’re surrounded by the limbs and leaves, which feel like they’re reaching inside of the room. It feels like a tree house! This is what it looked like before it became sis’ room:
And at one time, also before the kiddos, the playroom functioned as a guest room and looked like this:
If you take anything away from this post, it’ll likely be that we switch rooms around in our house. A lot. It’s something we’ve always done ever since we first got together a decade ago. We love to try different layouts in a room until we feel like we get it right (or when we just feel like switching things up) and aren’t afraid of change within the home. If it feels like it functions better as something else, why not try it out and see what happens? And especially in this period of time when some of us are home more than usual, it’s likely inevitable that things will get moved around from time to time.
This room was fun while it lasted! Maybe one day we’ll turn this back into a playroom for good. Right now the couch is in the landing area at the top of our stairs, along with the TV and a another dresser, so that space is currently functioning as their playroom and it’s doing just fine.
Oh well, at least we’ll always have the photos 😊.
