Happy Birthday PJ!!!!

My favorite house renovator, ex-realtor and current dad of the year has a birthday today.

As you know, we’re at the beach this week with our best friends Matt & Beau, and we’re celebrating PJ’s birthday!! We try to do a beach trip every year on his birthday, with the exception of 2019 and 2020, but like last year’s celebration, we decided to spend it with friends in our favorite little slice of heaven.

PJ isn’t a fan of his birthdays, something that even 12 years in I am struggling to grapple with, but I think we’ve finally nailed down what really works for him: a low-key day at the beach with zero plans. As long as we don’t make a big deal about it, it’s all good (which is so hard to do! I want to celebrate him from the rooftops like all the time, especially on his day!!).

So that’s just what we did today. The sun finally came out and we spent the entire day at the beach playing paddle ball, trying to surf on the sand, relaxing in the sun, reading a little bit, and playing in the water with the kids. After a week of bad-ish weather, the sun coming out today couldn’t have been better timing. It’s like the universe knew PJ needed a sunny beach day to really make this trip complete. So, thank you, universe.

Matt and Beau are making us dinner tonight and the kids are in the kitchen with them right now helping. PJ and I are relaxing in the living room sipping wine (is this real life?) while the late afternoon sun pours through all seven windows in this condo. It’s been such a great day.

The thing about PJ, the thing he doesn’t like to make a big deal of, is the thing I love most about him: he is, without a doubt, the greatest person I have ever met. His complexities, his quirks, his oddities and his passions are what make him so special. They’re what make him unlike anyone else on the planet. He’s rare, but he doesn’t realize just how rare he is. Maybe that’s only for everyone around him to know instead. He’s the hardest worker I know. The most determined man I’ve ever met. To quote Virginia Woolf, he is, in every way, all that anyone could be.

He’s the love of my life, and I am so happy to celebrate him, in any capacity, today and every day. Happy birthday PJ McKay!!! We love you so damn much.
