An Afternoon with My Sister
/It feels like we never get to spend enough time together as adults, with schedules and obligations constantly getting in the way. But yesterday, my younger sister came over for the afternoon and we caught up talking about everything and nothing, watching Practical Magic and picking out which outfits of Sandra Bullock’s she needs to copy this fall, discussing names for her and her fiance’s new dog they’re getting today.
I was thinking about the way siblings interact with each other as adults, you know, when they’re not forced to spend every second together like we all do as children. I started thinking about our own kids and wondered how they will be when they get older.
Will they keep in touch? Will they go over to one another’s house for an afternoon to just sit and do nothing? Will they all come home for the holidays every year (they better)? Will they have anything in common once they no longer live under the same roof?
We’re all still close as adults, my sisters and brother, and we text or talk on the phone every day, but it’s been hard to make time to see them in person the last few years. That’s why these random hours spent with my sister mean so much. They’re few and far between, and they’re my favorite.
