The Accumulation of Stuff
Do you ever look around your house and just see stuff everywhere? And you wonder how it got there? That was my POV last night when, after our latest Vino & Vent, we went into our bedroom and hopped in the shower to get ready for bed.
As I was walking to the bathroom, I glanced over at the tall dresser next to the door. It was then that I noticed the random assortment of items strewn across it: The wallet, the phone, the camera, the glass of wine, the books, the flowers, the lamp, the picture of us from 2010, the candle, one of the kids’ squishy toys and their spelling test notebook. Not a rhyme or reason for any of them being there, but alas, it’s where they ended up.
All at once, it was as if the dresser was carrying our entire life on its shoulders. I looked at the scene and felt warm an cozy and safe, seeing all of our favorite things in one place. Was it a little crowded? Yes. Was it messy and kind of chaotic looking? Also yes. But it’s us right now, and all those little trinkets are a reflection of the season of life we’re currently in. One day, I assume, I will glance at that dresser and there will be a little less stuff on it, also reflective of a future time and place when our house is maybe a little quieter than it is now. Oh, but right now, I am so grateful for the accumulation of stuff.
The accumulation of items that make up our family’s life.
