Two Fun Games to Play with a Group
/Even though the holidays are almost over, we’re always looking for ways to keep the family entertained around the dinner table or in a group setting. Of course there’s the usual chatter, catching up with people you haven’t seen in a while, and the occasional debate over who gets the last piece of pie, but sometimes it’s nice to add a little structure to the fun.
If you’re looking for lighthearted, no-prep games that spark laughter (and maybe a little friendly competition), we’ve got two favorites that are perfect for all ages. The newest member of our team introduced us to both of these (more on him later!) and we’ve been playing nonstop ever since.
1. I’m Going on a Road Trip and I’m Bringing…
This is a classic memory game that starts off easy but quickly turns into a hilarious test of recall. Here’s how it works:
One person kicks things off by saying, “I’m going on a road trip and I’m bringing [item of their choice].”
The next person repeats the first item and adds their own: “I’m going on a road trip and I’m bringing [first item] and [second item].”
You keep going around the table, with each player adding a new item to the list and repeating all the previous ones in order.
If someone forgets an item or messes up the order, they’re out.
The last person standing with a perfect memory wins!
We love it because t’s deceptively challenging. By the fifth or sixth round, things start to get tricky. It also creates inside jokes. The sillier the items people choose, the funnier it gets. The best part is kids love it. It’s simple enough for little ones to play, but adults will have just as much fun. Our kids, especially our daughter, ask to play it every night.
Pro Tip: To keep things interesting, add a theme like “I’m going to the North Pole” or “I’m throwing a holiday party” and let the items fit the vibe.
2. The Last Letter Game
This word game is perfect for filling those quiet lulls between courses or while waiting for dessert. It’s fast-paced, easy to follow, and just competitive enough to keep everyone engaged. Here’s how to play:
The first player says a word—any word at all. Let’s say “Apple.”
The next player has to come up with a new word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. For example: “Elephant.”
Play continues around the table. If someone can’t think of a word or repeats one that’s already been said, they’re out.
The last player standing wins!
It’s sneaky brainy. Without realizing it, everyone’s vocabulary starts expanding. Expect people to reach deep for obscure words when things get tough. It’s also adaptable. You can make it easier by allowing repeated words for younger kids or harder by only allowing holiday-themed words.
Bonus Round: To up the ante, set a timer and give each player 5 seconds to come up with a word.
Both of these games are perfect for cozy nights around the fire, lively family dinners, or even holiday road trips. They don’t require any setup, and the only supplies needed are good company and a little imagination.
So the next time you’re hosting, pull out one of these easy games and watch as the room fills with laughter, groans of frustration, and playful competition. And who knows? Maybe the winner gets that last piece of pie after all.
