Parental Advice is Always a Comfort, No Matter How Old You Are
Today was one of those hard parenting days we’ve all been on both sides of, first as the child and then as the parent. Seeing your child in pain, in any form, is the worst kind of torture. And sometimes the best thing you can do when something in your life is hard/wrong/frustrating, is call your mom.
I called her tonight and said I just wanted her to stop by if she could, not for very long and nothing super serious, just that we needed to vent and discuss. An hour later, she was at our door with a small glass of wine ready to dive in head first. We talked in the front room for an hour and when she left, I immediately felt better.
We didn’t even necessarily come to a conclusion, but sometimes just talking to someone you love or who has been where you are now is such a comfort. It’s such a luxury, and one that I never take for granted no matter how many times she answers my call.
It’s cliche, but I don’t know what I would do without her. Even at 33, I don’t know what I would do if she wasn’t right down the road at all times. She was where I was first, she did it all by herself, and she’s seen it all.
And I can’t think of anyone better suited to give advice than that.
