The Best TV Show You’re Not Watching

We started watching it and, in one weekend, we finished this limited series and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

Have you seen Years and Years on HBO? It’s a new limited series that premiered in June and stars Emma Thompson (icon), Russel Tovey (from Looking), and Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful), among others. It’s a political satire show, but it’s very light on humor and very heavy on drama and chaos.

It centers around the Lyons family, who live in the U.K., and their personal and professional struggles as they navigate through the world’s changing political, technological, and economic climate over the course of 15 years. Emma Thompson stars as Vivian Rook, a Trump-like media personality who decides to run for public office. It makes you think about today’s world and the politics that surround us, and how we could let certain things happen that we never thought would.

Each episode is, in short: a lot. We joke how we breathe a huge sigh after every episode because it takes so much out of us, haha. The music and the way they cut through the years and all that changes is SO good, it’ll give you chills. We ate up every episode, but apparently not many other people did. It had staggering low ratings in the U.S., which is wild to us because it was so well crafted and thought out.

It’s somewhat disappointing because it seems, unlike Big Little Lies, that Years and Years is truly a limited series and won’t be returning for a season two, which means everything may (or may not) be neatly wrapped up by the end of the season. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t want more of the Lyons family, but we can appreciate when something is just finished, standing alone as a singular piece of art/entertainment (except when that something is Penny Dreadful. Still not over that).

What’s a show we should be watching that isn’t widely known? What are you watching these days?
