Let the Terrible Twos Begin

We’ve been through it once with the middle kiddo, and now it’s time for baby girl’s chance to shine. And by shine, we mean she is, most definitely and without a doubt, in the midst of going through the terrible twos.

No joke. As we’re typing this, she just came up to us and, in more or less words (since she only knows 4 or 5) told us she didn’t want to watch Toy Story anymore and wants to watch “Ma”, which could either mean Moana or Tangled. When we told her that her brothers are both watching Toy Story and we wouldn’t be changing it, she shrieked, put her head down, and buried it into the couch, which is actually pretty mild compared to what she was doing just last week. Picture running and screaming in place, hands flailing everywhere, and screaming/crying all because we told her “no” to something she wanted. She just had her second birthday a few weeks ago, and we always thought the terrible twos were myth, or exaggerated in some way. Nope. They’re definitely real.

We know it’s mostly because she wants to be more independent now that she’s understanding things more, but she doesn’t know how to talk super well yet, so letting us know what she wants with words isn’t working. So she resorts to screaming or crying or pointing or smiling.

We already went through this with her older brother, the middle kiddo. When we first got them, he wasn’t very good at expressing his feelings properly, and would often fall to the floor in screaming fits when he didn’t get his way. Fast forward a few months and he is a completely different kiddo now: he’s kind, caring, sweet, and feels ALL the feels. It’s crazy what a little structure and discipline will do, isn’t it? Also, he turned three at the end of last year, so we’re sure his age has a lot to do with his progression.

What’s crazy is that, while we’re going through the hardest phase yet with her, at the same time we’re also having the most fun with her we’ve ever had. She’s developing such a personality, one filled with smiles and laughs and hugs and kisses and sass and screams when she doesn’t get her way and hand claps when she does. It’s such a wild ride that we’re on with her lately and every day seems to bring some new experience or feeling and every day we’re excited to see what happens next.

She’s currently loving:

  • The Moana Soundtrack

  • Toy Story 1, 2 & 3

  • Saying “woah!” which means no, which she’s recently discovered gets the desired response she wants from us

  • Swiping/grabbing the air/nothing on any flat surface

  • Putting on our shoes that are ginormous on her and walking around the house

  • Being held

  • Choosing which movie to watch

  • Playing on cell phones/taking selfies (though she knows she isn’t allowed to be on ours, so she has to get her fix from her family when she sees them :)

  • Poking things with her middle finger and retreating it quickly, smiling slyly as she does it

  • Taking Tupperware lids out of the cabinet and stacking them in piles all over the house

Getting the opportunity to look after this beautiful two year old baby girl has been one of the highlights of our lives. She brings us so much joy and we’re grateful for the chance to be in her life, for however long. The last six months have gone by so fast haven’t they? We can’t wait to see what the next six months look like.
