Three Thousand Years of Longing

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Last night, we stumbled upon this new movie called Three Thousand Years of Longing on Amazon Prime. Have you seen it?

It’s written, directed and produced by George Miller, the genius behind the Mad Max franchise, so you already know anything by him is going to be a magical wild ride. And it was.

The plot is a little hard to explain, but it’s about a woman, played by the brilliant Tilda Swinton, stumbling upon a glass bottle carrying, unbeknownst to her, a Djinn inside of it. The Djinn is played by Idris Elba, who I am convinced can do no wrong, and he gives such a sympathetic and longing portrayal to the role. He tells her he can grant her three wishes, whatever she wants, within certain guidelines. The only problem is, she is pretty content with her life and doesn’t really want anything. The plot thickens!

The movie weaves between present day with the Djinn and Tilda and his stories of all the years he has been granting people wishes, going as far back as The Queen of Sheba, and all of the ways they went wrong and continually trapped him inside various bottles.

It’s this sort of fantastical, epic movie that feels like a complete adventure while also being extremely intimate and delicate. It was giving What Dreams May Come, the classic late 90’s movie with Robin Williams. They don’t really make movies like this one anymore, and I can sadly kind of see why. Three Thousand Years of Longing was a box office failure, and received only mixed reviews. But don’t listen to any of that.

Go watch this movie. It was so good, and PJ even said as it was ending that he wished it was longer so we could keep watching it. You’re going to love it, I promise.
