A Historic Ruling for the LGBTQ+ Community & Another Step Towards Equal Rights
/This morning, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that firing a person because they are gay or transgender violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This. Is. HUGE.
Today will go down as one of the most significant days in LGBTQ+ history, and it would have never happened without those who fought tirelessly for our rights for decades. We get emotional thinking about the sacrifices, the riots, the killings, the speeches, the torment and anguish, the pride and the joy, and all of the other moments that have led here. To those people we send our deepest thanks and love. We owe you everything.
We saw someone post on social media a quote (can’t remember who said it or shared it) saying something along the lines of: “In this country, it is completely legal to get married on Sunday and get fired on Monday for being gay” which, as of today, isn’t the case anymore. We hate statements like the one we’re about to say, because they’re so cliche, but isn’t it wild that it’s 2020 and this is JUST now being ruled? It seems crazy that despite all the progress for LGBTQ+ rights that’s been made in the last decade, it was still legal to fire an employee for their sexual orientation.
After a rough start to Pride month this year, this news feels like something worth celebrating.
Happy Pride, friends. xo
